How To Choose The Right Contemporary Art Print

If you're planning to visit a contemporary art dealer to purchase a print, you may not be entirely sure how you want the piece to fit into your home or place of business. Fortunately, you can follow a few basic tricks to choose the right print.

Placement

Where do you intend to place the contemporary art print? Placement matters because it determines how much the print will dominate the room. A large print over a fireplace, for example, is going to become a major conversation piece because it's at a natural focal point in the room. In that scenario, you'll need to think about how much you want to lean into the idea of the print being the room's entire focus.

Colors

You should also think about how the colors of the room will interact with your contemporary art print. Do you want it to blend in or stand out? Contrasting colors and tones can be quite stark, making the piece central to the room's design. Conversely, a more subtle contrast can allow a print to become something people discover once they look around.

It is also a good idea to think about the role of color. A print that features bright oranges can serve as a complement to a room that's dark blue, for example. Similarly, you might use a bright red print as a bit of spot color in an otherwise white space.

Themes

Every contemporary art print has a theme. Even if it is an abstract print, you can develop a theme around colors and feelings. More realistic artistic depictions allow you to tie themes together with surroundings, too. If you have a view of a bay, for example, you might want a print with a boat in it.

Size

A print should be the right size for a space. If you have a small bathroom, you probably don't want to have a print as big as the mirror sitting there competing with it. There is nothing wrong with a large print in the right setting, but you should reserve that choice for a space where you want to make a visual statement.

Textures

Bear in mind the print doesn't necessarily need to have a physical texture. However, the appearance of a texture in the artwork can create interest. Especially if you want to add some visual appeal to a room that's fairly bland, a print with a sense of texture can be fun. Texture options are as varied as the themes for a print so be creative in choosing how you want to employ them.
