Old-time photo shoots generate the look of a historical period in a fun way. If you are interested in doing one of these shoots as a cowboy, you need to know how to dress and act like one. This will make the effect of the photo more realistic.

Dress the Part

While many old-time photo shoot centers will have a variety of decorative items for you to wear, you can bring your own clothes for the best effect. You need to be dressed in the following items to make the most realistic looking cowboy:

  • Hat – one that is leather and a little dirty or worn is your best bet for realism
  • Boots – avoid those excessively decorative boots you see some poseurs wear and instead get a simple roper-style boot with a flat heel
  • Belt – a three-piece silver buckle looks very authentic to the way cowboys really dressed
  • Jeans – buy a western brand and wear them around for a few days to break them in; purchase a pair that is just a little over your normal waist size in order to cover the tops of your boots
  • Shirt – a button-down western shirt is pretty easy to find and will suit just about any old-time photo shoot situation

Put on Some Makeup

Cowboys lived rough lives, and, even if they weren't quite the "quick draw" types you see in the movies, they still got busted up riding and roping steer. A few facial scars can create a realistic look that will make your photo shoot more fun. To make realistic scars:

  1. Add a line of red makeup down the side of your cheek
  2. Decorate the side of it with black and dark blue makeup
  3. Blend these latter two colors together to make them smoother
  4. Dab a little pink along the center of the scar

Pose Like a Cowboy

Take a look at some real and historical photos of cowboys to get a feel for how they really stood. Most cowboys were simple men, who were tough and who preferred a casual pose. Thumbs in the belt buckle is a particularly common look with most cowboys.

You can also buck your knees out a little to create that simple swagger that accompanies many cowboys. Experiment with several poses until you find one that is comfortable for you. Now when it comes time for your photo shoot, you will look the part without any extra effort.
